Remember the ink piece I did of a Heart in a Bear Trap? Well, that was an idea by my dear friend Jayme Ludwig for a tattoo she has wanted for a long time. She gave me permission to turn that idea into a piece for LoveSick. After the show, she took my drawing to the talented Sam Wolf at Signature Tattoo in Ferndale as a concept for him to turn into the final tattoo design, and this is the end product. I sat with her the whole time and it was amazing to see it come to life.

Glenn Barr is rounding up some of your favorite illustrators, lowbrow, pop surrealism & graffiti artists for Lyric 2012, opening this Saturday at 323 East in Royal Oak!

On the heels of the last March’s inaugural Lyric exhibition at 323East Gallery, Glenn Barr is back to curate the second incarnation of his pervasive musically themed group exhibition Lyric 2012. With an expanded roster of local and international artists ranging from lowbrow, pop surrealism, graffiti and illustration, this show is set to be the largest group exhibition to date at the Metro Detroit gallery named Best of Place to Buy Art (for the 3rd Year in A Row!) by Real Detroit Weekly. For this exhibition Glenn had one simple request for each artist: Each piece of art must be 12 x 12 inches, paying homage to the timeless beauty that can fit on the cover of a vinyl record. Each artist has been given free reign to draw inspiration from their favorite artist, album, song or lyric and put their personal interpretation to canvas.

“Music and its lyrics can always stimulate our emotions as well as leave us contemplating a visual narrative. Artists have always been known to use lyrics as inspiration and with this have created some of the greatest works in the world. This exhibition will illuminate the artist’s personal transcription from a song lyric to canvas.” - Glenn Barr

I picked up an inexpensive hardcover notebook and customized it with a completely ridiculous looking Cheshire Cat to use as a guestbook for my wedding.

Fear not. I can save you from your cider woes. Ace: Sweet. 9 grams of sugar. Fox Barrel: 100% from pears. Delish. Slightly less sweet. 9 grams sugar. Strongbow: Dry but very tasty: 12 grams of sugar for an effing 16.9 oz. can. There are more but I've had a few tonight. Enjoy your lack of beer belly! Woodchuck is not the only answer!

All of this focus on Trayvon Martin’s character after his getting suspended in high school—for an empty bag of weed, no less—is disconcerting. Anyone can get suspended for the silliest of offenses. Your tumblr was threatened with an in-school suspension in middle school for throwing a pencil across the room. Later in high school, your tumblr was sentenced to a ten-day suspension for a rather ambitious commerce scheme involving the school’s hockey fan club, t-shirt sales, and the morning news. (The suspension was later dropped to one day at home—which your tumblr found far more rewarding than punishment.) The point is: we all get reprimanded in school. And we all wear hoodies. We’d even bet a few of you have wound up in the lonely company of an empty bag containing traces of marijuana from time to time. Let’s stop this character assassination and stay focused on the facts of the case, Internet.

REMINDER: Starkweather Arts Center is putting on an Alice in Wonderland-themed show!

This show is taking place in May, and I really want to encourage all my artist friends to participate for completely selfish reasons. I’ll be getting married at Starkweather in May while this show is on display. I’ll have some pieces in the show, including the painting I made for the invitation. The more of you who help out by submitting your beautiful work, the more awesome my wedding will be. Completely selfish, see? I would really appreciate it, though. Sincerely. <3
