Here are a few pics from the opening of my latest solo exhibition: A Bun A Day.

These are all from the very beginning of the show because my photographer/boyfriend got tired of snapping pics about 30 minutes into it.

A HUGE thank you to everyone that made it out. It was great to see you all.

The show opens tonight! Will I see you there?

Working on a last minute piece for my show on Friday. Yes, I’m crazy enough to try and squeeze in a triptych.

Press about “A Bun A Day”

I’ve been getting some nice press for my upcoming solo exhibition in various blogs (Perfect Laughter, streetculturemash, Motorcityblog). Today I got some attention in some printed locations (who conveniently also post their content online for me to share with you).

Metro Times featured me as one of their “Critic’s Picks,” and Real Detroit Weekly’s Robert del Valle wrote me up in his Stage & Canvas column.

Did you notice how both went out of their way to make sure you knew that I call myself lowbrow? I guess not everyone must love that term. Well, I do and it describes me perfectly.

Perfect Laughter has a post about my upcoming show on their blog today. If you are a Detroit artist, you need to be following them. If you aren’t from Detroit, you should still follow them. They have great taste AND make some sweet stuff themselves.

Wanna Buy A Carrot? :: 2009
I painted this last year for the Meth & Hot Dogs show in St. Louis, but I didn’t get it back in time to put it in my solo show, Bunderland. You’ll get a chance to see it in person at my new solo show, A Bun A Day at Five15 from August 13th to September 10th.

For the second year in a row Five15 will be hosting a solo exhibition from Metro Detroit lowbrow artist Heather Hansma. Last October she presented her collection “Bunderland.” This year’s show will also be centered around her “Puff Bun” characters, a sort of egg-shaped rabbit creature with minimal features. The show’s title, “A Bun A Day,” is a takeoff on the proverb “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

The Puff Buns are generally participating in some form or pop culture parody, and this show is no different. Painted, buntastic depictions of old-school PC game SkiFree, Paczki Day in Detroit, and even Yeshua of Nazareth are all par for the course.

Five15 Media Mojo and More is an independent coffee and gift shop that prides itself on featuring counterculture art, products, and events. An opening reception for “A Bun A Day” will take place 7:00 – 10:00pm on Friday, August 13, 2010. For more information please contact the artist at heather@hansmaillustration.com.

Some people (this may or may not include me) rely heavily on Facebook to organize their social engagements. If you are one of those people, and you would like to come to my show, here is the event page so you can RSVP.
