Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of the lives of loved ones who have departed this world. It is known primarily as a Mexican holiday, but it is also celebrated in the United States, Latin America, and parts of Europe and Asia. There are also cultures around the world that have holidays of their own in the same spirit, such as Japan’s Bon Festival. Human beings have a propensity to celebrate the lives of their dead.

In honor of this global tradition, Starkweather Arts Center is hosting a group show of over 35 international artists inspired by Dia de los Muertos. The show is curated by Heather Hansma, who is an illustrator and lowbrow gallery artist from Metro Detroit. The artists in this show are an eclectic group representing a vast array of approaches to art. It makes for a show that is dually cohesive and incredibly diverse. During the opening there will also be a one night performance piece by Jayme Ludwig in full Dia de los Muertos-themed regalia.

Artists participating in the show include Stephen Vincent, Cody Schibi, Love & A Sandwich, Hello Again Monsters, Kill Taupe, ThEm DoLLz, Plush Goodness, Kat Brunnegraff, Deadly Sweet, Crystal Mielcarek, Patti Haskins, Plushroom Soup, Juana Moore, Kristin Barr, Ben Butcher, Lee DeVito, Happycloud Thunderhead, Anna Lisa Schneider, Perfect Laughter, Jenn and Tony Bot, Matt Lackey, Shannon O’Neill, Megan Harris, Jason Cole, Matt Deterior, Allison Gardiner, Amy Beth Geerling Payne, Katerina Friday, Lauren Magda, Brian Iler, Adrienne Lesperance, Serra Abend, Erin McManness, Jayme Ludwig, Jonathan Wilcox, Kat Thacker, and Heather Hansma.

In addtion to the visual delights, Detroit folk rock band The Hand and the Ocean will be performing during the opening. Seasonal food and drink will be served as well.

Follow Friday? Detroit Rocks edition. This week we go to the land of Robocop and find you a blog that showcases what Motown is well known for, a couple of amazing Detroit artists, and a guy in Georgia who has nothing to do with Detroit at all.
itCars: How could we talk about Detroit and not whore out mention our network blog itCars? Do I comment about the SUX 6000 or the 1986 Ford Taurus and keep it Robocop related? itCars can and will bring the worlds most amazing cars in the world to your Tumblr doorstep daily.  Click here and follow and get a little oil in your bloodstream.
Kill Taupe: A self described Illustrator and mischief maker living among the hellish strip malls and McMansions of suburban Detroit. My work often contains slurpee chugging bears, swearing veggies, manic rabbits, zombies and high levels of snark. Follow Kill Taupe and prevent another ED-209 malfunction.
Hansma Illustrations: How does a illustrator and lowbrow gallery artist based out of the Detroit area sound?. She created Puff Buns. Puff Buns are rabbits and rabbits are awesome so Follow the talented Heather Hansma or you are in violation of thew forth Prime Directive.
Staff Spotlight: Automatic Bazooti: I have no idea what that name means. Considering he works on itmakesnosense, one of our NSFW blogs, I am going guess is is some obscure sex term from urban dictionary. If you follow him he will help to remove ‘Nuke’ from the streets of Detroit.
Note: If you are wondering, Tumblr had nothing but problems all day Friday and throughout most of the weekend. So even if we could get the post up, most of the readers wouldn’t be able to see it or click through to see the artists pages. We apologize for the inconsistency.

O hay there, new followers!

This weekend I’ll be at The Rust Belt Market in Ferndale during the DIY Street Fair. My good friend Rocket Girl Design is sharing her booth with me there. We’ll both be there Friday night, I’m working all-day Saturday, and she’ll be in on Sunday.
The Puff Buns are feeling a little claustrophobic in my overstuffed studio, so they are looking for a new place to crash. ALL of my original paintings for sale will be $50 to $100 off. Everything will be under $200. Sweet.
I’m also putting all my earrings for sale. Every style is 25% off, including my iconic Pirate Bunny earrings.
Please, swing by and say hi to me! And while you are there you can also check out the sale my bud Kill Taupe is putting on over at his booth. This is the weekend to pick up some sweet art, my friends.
