Some shots from the opening of Day of the Dead at Starkweather Arts Center in Romeo, MI. Exhibit will be on display until November 5th.

I’ll be posting shots from the opening all day today, but I want to first reblog this because I think KT was smart enough to get some images I failed to. I think I may have to go back and reshoot some art in the daylight.

The Hand in the Ocean - Have Another Laugh

We are psyched to have this band playing tonight at the opening of the Day of the Dead show. I heard them during DIY weekend while I was at the Rust Belt Market. I immediately fell in love. You can find them on the web at reverbnation.com/thehandintheocean.

Day of the Dead Show Sneak Preview: Perfect LaughterDennis and Christina Jacobs are the talented husband and wife team that make up the screenprint extraordinaire that is Perfect Laughter. They aren’t only satisfied with making their mark on the art world with their own work, though. They also bust their asses to bring the amazing talent of other artists to light through their blog (which I have been known to guest post at now and again).
This is an actual sneak of a peak of a preview as it does not contain the whole image. If you are really curious, you can see the full image on their website right now.

Day of the Dead Show Sneak Preview: Plushroom SoupPlushroom Soup is another one of the fantastic plush artists we have in the show. She was also kind enough to give me a write-up about herself that I’m just going to go ahead and copypasta here:
“I am a self-taught creature creator who loves fairy tales, mythology, pumpkin-flavored anything, and the moon. I like creating things that are just a little off-kilter to challenge traditional notions like plush needs to be cute, or that plush is only for children. Embrace quirky. Because we’re all a little bit odd, and that’s okay.”

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of the lives of loved ones who have departed this world. It is known primarily as a Mexican holiday, but it is also celebrated in the United States, Latin America, and parts of Europe and Asia. There are also cultures around the world that have holidays of their own in the same spirit, such as Japan’s Bon Festival. Human beings have a propensity to celebrate the lives of their dead.

In honor of this global tradition, Starkweather Arts Center is hosting a group show of over 35 international artists inspired by Dia de los Muertos. The show is curated by Heather Hansma, who is an illustrator and lowbrow gallery artist from Metro Detroit. The artists in this show are an eclectic group representing a vast array of approaches to art. It makes for a show that is dually cohesive and incredibly diverse. During the opening there will also be a one night performance piece by Jayme Ludwig in full Dia de los Muertos-themed regalia.

Artists participating in the show include Stephen Vincent, Cody Schibi, Love & A Sandwich, Hello Again Monsters, Kill Taupe, ThEm DoLLz, Plush Goodness, Kat Brunnegraff, Deadly Sweet, Crystal Mielcarek, Patti Haskins, Plushroom Soup, Juana Moore, Kristin Barr, Ben Butcher, Lee DeVito, Happycloud Thunderhead, Anna Lisa Schneider, Perfect Laughter, Jenn and Tony Bot, Matt Lackey, Shannon O’Neill, Megan Harris, Jason Cole, Matt Deterior, Allison Gardiner, Amy Beth Geerling Payne, Katerina Friday, Lauren Magda, Brian Iler, Adrienne Lesperance, Serra Abend, Erin McManness, Jayme Ludwig, Jonathan Wilcox, Kat Thacker, and Heather Hansma.

In addtion to the visual delights, Detroit folk rock band The Hand and the Ocean will be performing during the opening. Seasonal food and drink will be served as well.

Day of the Dead Show Sneak Preview: Kill TaupeI was going to write something satirical about how I have no idea who this asshole is, but then I realized that there was only a 50/50 shot that people would understand that I’m joking. If you don’t know already, Kill Taupe is a dear friend of mine and I freaking love his work. His work is not only always beautifully executed in elegant simplicity, but it features incredible wit. His delightful skewering of pop culture is everything that the Detroit lowbrow scene should be.

Programming Note for Day of the Dead Show

We originally has the show scheduled from October 7-29, but shy of the actual Dia de los Muertos celebrations on November 2. The gallery has set time slots we have to abide by, but a few days ago we got news that we could extend the show so it is now running an additional week! That means you can now see all the incredible art until November 5th!

I hope to see as many folks as possible at the opening at Starkweather Arts Center October 7th from 7-10pm. We’ll have a live performance piece from the beautiful Jayme Ludwig and delicious food and drinks (rumors are there will be cake balls, balls made out of cake!).

Day of the Dead Show Sneak Preview: Erin McMannessErin is the type of artist that doesn’t like doing just one type of thing. She not creates beautiful digital illustrations, but makes handcrafted jewelry that she sells in her Etsy shop. (Note: I actually own one of her cookie rings!) I was really excited when she told me she wanted to work traditionally for this show. Erin never ceases to impress me with they way she is always trying something new while maintaining the same sensibility as an artist.
