Glenn Barr is rounding up some of your favorite illustrators, lowbrow, pop surrealism & graffiti artists for Lyric 2012, opening this Saturday at 323 East in Royal Oak!

From 323 East:

On the heels of the last March’s inaugural Lyric exhibition at 323East Gallery, Glenn Barr is back to curate the second incarnation of his pervasive musically themed group exhibition Lyric 2012. With an expanded roster of local and international artists ranging from lowbrow, pop surrealism, graffiti and illustration, this show is set to be the largest group exhibition to date at the Metro Detroit gallery named Best of Place to Buy Art (for the 3rd Year in A Row!) by Real Detroit Weekly. For this exhibition Glenn had one simple request for each artist: Each piece of art must be 12 x 12 inches, paying homage to the timeless beauty that can fit on the cover of a vinyl record. Each artist has been given free reign to draw inspiration from their favorite artist, album, song or lyric and put their personal interpretation to canvas.

“Music and its lyrics can always stimulate our emotions as well as leave us contemplating a visual narrative. Artists have always been known to use lyrics as inspiration and with this have created some of the greatest works in the world. This exhibition will illuminate the artist’s personal transcription from a song lyric to canvas.” - Glenn Barr

Participating Artists Include: Luke Chueh / Revok / Brett Amory / Eimi / Matt Eaton / Beau Stanton / Ron Zakrin / Tom Thewes / Tristan Eaton / Travis Louie / Chikuwaemil / Shojonotomo / Mark Heggie / BASK / Ray Domzalski/ Jeff Soto / Rick Morris /Chet Zar / Mark Dancy / Joey Seeman / THH70/ Bryan Cunningham / William Wray / Davin Brainard / Daniel Peacock / David Diavu Vecchiato/ Robert Nixon / Matt Gordon / Casey Weldon / Erik Otto / Martha Rich / John Dunivant / Derek Hess / Chris Dean / Dan Armand / April Segedi / Made514 and more..

WBRW, which is a local cable access channel in Romeo, came and filmed the opening of my Day of the Dead show at Starkweather Arts Center. This is a 10-minute synopsis, but you can also watch the full program, footage of just the art, and just footage of The Hand in the Ocean’s performance.

“Day of the Dead” group show opens Oct. 7th

Artwork is starting to pour in from the artists in the show and it is very exciting. Since we are almost two weeks away, I’m going to start posting a few sneak peaks to get you excited in the lead up to the opening.

The opening will be 7-10pm, October 7th, at Starkweather Arts Center in Romeo, MI. We have local, national, and even some international artists participating in the show. Come out for a great time!

Happy Serum: Press Roundup

I can hardly believe how fast time flies and that our show is opening tomorrow. We’ve put a heck of a lot of hours into putting this together and it all culminates in a big ol’ party tomorrow. Here are some of the articles some nice folks have written about the show:

The Romeo Observer - Happy Serum art show features 3 pop surrealists

The Oakland Press - Starkweather Arts Center gives metro Detroit ‘Happy Serum’

The Macomb Daily - A dose of ‘Happy Serum’ at Starkweather Arts Center

Advisor & Source - Artists bring unique works to Starkweather exhibit (Note: the pictures in the article show one of my prints, but the other works are that of Emi Slade (the cyclops sculpture) and Daniel Allyn Lee’s Happycloud Thunderhead plushies.)

CW50 - “Happy Serum”

Perfect Laughter - Happy Serum Opens on June 3 at Starkweather Arts Center

Whew! I’m pretty stoked for tomorrow. Hope to see you there!

Emi Slade’s “Plated” opens @ Woods Gallery

killtaupe:

Metro-Detroit artist Emi Slade served up a plethora of gourmet extraterrestrial delights with the opening of Plated, her solo exhibit at the Woods Gallery.

Her collection of new sculptures were a veritable smorgasbord of alien delights with wide eyed herb encrusted creatures, forlorn ice cream plops and cephalopods cradled with fruit.

The show will be up through June 23rd so make sure to swing by and check it out.

I was working at Starkweather last night and missed this, but my “assistant” (seriously, nobody tell my significant other that I have assigned this title to him) went in my place and came back with excited tales of wonder. I’ll be headed over sometime soon to see it all in person.

Wanna Buy A Carrot? :: 2009
I painted this last year for the Meth & Hot Dogs show in St. Louis, but I didn’t get it back in time to put it in my solo show, Bunderland. You’ll get a chance to see it in person at my new solo show, A Bun A Day at Five15 from August 13th to September 10th.

Beautiful show from two CCS illustration alumni. I highly recommend stopping over in Romeo to see it. Most of Kristin’s pieces are done in colored pencil and they look great. Not often to you see colored pencil drawings that make you forget what medium they are done in.
