Speaking of that amorous mood that the second week of the second month always brings, get a quirky and early kiss on 2/4 when Hansma, Schibi and Buckenberger (nope, not a law firm) ascend at LIFT Detroit. Love is the game, Lovesick is the name of the show, and whatever “nausea” ensues will be a fitting rebuttal to that trite commercialism we alluded to above.

Robert del Valle, Real Detroit Weekly

RDV included our show in his Stage & Canvas column in this week’s RDW. Yay!

One more week until LOVESICK opens!
Some neat-o stuff about this opening:
It is LIFT’s first show of the 2012 season, with plenty more amazingness to come!
At least TWENTY brand-spankin’ new pieces have been made especially for this show.
LOVESICK will also feature the unveiling of several Limited Edition Print Runs of work in the show.
It is an opening! Do you know what there is at openings? Besides the art, artists, and neat-o art lovers. Come on. Guess. Free food and booze!

Hot from their recent Huck Gee signing event, LIFT Detroit is gearing up for a big show! Oh, and about that Huck Gee signing - they have a few “The Art of Huck Gee” books available. Going forward, we’re very excited for this new show and to educate ourselves and you (the reader) about the three artists participating in “LOVESICK,” there will be some posts in the coming days showcasing our favorite work by each individual. For instance, check out this fantastic print (above) for sale by Heather Hansma!

I don’t think I could come up with a better description of this show. Now excuse me while I dive back into this vat of paint I have set-up to assist me in creating all this new work. ^_^

Exciting news, folks! I’ve been hunkered down working on pieces for a new show that opens in a month at Lift with the mega-talented Cody Schibi (who is artist behind this piece) and Josh Buckenberger. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, LoveSick will feature brand-spankin’-new art from all three of us. I am so ridiculously excited for this show.

These Michibun plates were my contribution to Perfect Laughter’s Reclaimed show at River’s Edge Gallery. I found them all folded up in a trash can outside of a Michael’s and immediately knew they had to go into this show.

Day of the Dead Show Sneak Preview: Perfect LaughterDennis and Christina Jacobs are the talented husband and wife team that make up the screenprint extraordinaire that is Perfect Laughter. They aren’t only satisfied with making their mark on the art world with their own work, though. They also bust their asses to bring the amazing talent of other artists to light through their blog (which I have been known to guest post at now and again).
This is an actual sneak of a peak of a preview as it does not contain the whole image. If you are really curious, you can see the full image on their website right now.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of the lives of loved ones who have departed this world. It is known primarily as a Mexican holiday, but it is also celebrated in the United States, Latin America, and parts of Europe and Asia. There are also cultures around the world that have holidays of their own in the same spirit, such as Japan’s Bon Festival. Human beings have a propensity to celebrate the lives of their dead.

In honor of this global tradition, Starkweather Arts Center is hosting a group show of over 35 international artists inspired by Dia de los Muertos. The show is curated by Heather Hansma, who is an illustrator and lowbrow gallery artist from Metro Detroit. The artists in this show are an eclectic group representing a vast array of approaches to art. It makes for a show that is dually cohesive and incredibly diverse. During the opening there will also be a one night performance piece by Jayme Ludwig in full Dia de los Muertos-themed regalia.

Artists participating in the show include Stephen Vincent, Cody Schibi, Love & A Sandwich, Hello Again Monsters, Kill Taupe, ThEm DoLLz, Plush Goodness, Kat Brunnegraff, Deadly Sweet, Crystal Mielcarek, Patti Haskins, Plushroom Soup, Juana Moore, Kristin Barr, Ben Butcher, Lee DeVito, Happycloud Thunderhead, Anna Lisa Schneider, Perfect Laughter, Jenn and Tony Bot, Matt Lackey, Shannon O’Neill, Megan Harris, Jason Cole, Matt Deterior, Allison Gardiner, Amy Beth Geerling Payne, Katerina Friday, Lauren Magda, Brian Iler, Adrienne Lesperance, Serra Abend, Erin McManness, Jayme Ludwig, Jonathan Wilcox, Kat Thacker, and Heather Hansma.

In addtion to the visual delights, Detroit folk rock band The Hand and the Ocean will be performing during the opening. Seasonal food and drink will be served as well.

Programming Note for Day of the Dead Show

We originally has the show scheduled from October 7-29, but shy of the actual Dia de los Muertos celebrations on November 2. The gallery has set time slots we have to abide by, but a few days ago we got news that we could extend the show so it is now running an additional week! That means you can now see all the incredible art until November 5th!

I hope to see as many folks as possible at the opening at Starkweather Arts Center October 7th from 7-10pm. We’ll have a live performance piece from the beautiful Jayme Ludwig and delicious food and drinks (rumors are there will be cake balls, balls made out of cake!).
