Yes. I already know that I am a cornball. You don’t need to point it out.

Sometimes I get so excited for a show I forget to consider how I’m going to make a digital copy of the piece. For now you’ll have to deal with this highly reflective photographed version taken by Kill Taupe. His picture of it is better than anything I have so far. Once the show comes down I’ll try and not fail so hard. Right now you can’t even take a photo straight on or else all you can see is the photographer. D’oh!

An orange-y close-up of my current progress in the Doug Benson piece. My goal is to have it complete by the end if the month (which us Sunday). Fuck.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Current progress on my Doug Benson portrait through the lens of my Hipstamatic.

I am abandoning the Hipstamatic for this progress shot. The background is pretty much complete unless I change my mind about something. I think I’m done with the underpainting too. Now to start layering in the skin tones.

Today I’m finishing up the background before I go back in and render out the figure. First step is a green wash on the background, with a lighter wash over the figure to tie the foreground in with the background once I start adding the skin tones.

Gus and Sue :: 2009
I am reposting this in memory of Augustin Vincent who passed away yesterday afternoon. Gus was the patriarch of the Vincent family and the grandfather of my significant other. I created this painting as a commission for Gus’s son, Dimitrie, that was given as a present to Gus and his wife, Sue. He is already greatly missed by many, many people.
Rest in peace, Gus.

Portrait of Ed Helms :: 2007
This is from his The Daily Show days and not The Office days.  Looking at this again reminds me how much I love painting portraits and how I need to get back into it.

Stu Walking a Kiwi :: 2008

I tried to teach my first class of students (with kids from grades 3rd through 6th) the concept of underpainting and glazing. They were really frustrated by it. I wish I had remembered that I had taken scans at various stages of progress on this painting to show them. I could only demonstrate so far into the progress due to time restraints.
