LIFT’s first show of 2012 takes a twisted approach to St. Valentine’s Day, offering adorable and adorably disgusting portrayals of love in all its forms. Featuring the work of metro Detroit artists Heather Hansma and Josh Buckenberger and illustrator Cody Schibi (of Austin, Tex.), Lovesick presents the “adorable, horrifying and moody” effects that Cupid’s arrow can have. Grab your sweetie and take a surreal stroll down lover’s lane at LIFT, 228 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak; 248-545-5245; displays through March 4.
“Demented Amore,” Metro Times “Night & Day” column edited by Megan O’Neil
Speaking of that amorous mood that the second week of the second month always brings, get a quirky and early kiss on 2/4 when Hansma, Schibi and Buckenberger (nope, not a law firm) ascend at LIFT Detroit. Love is the game, Lovesick is the name of the show, and whatever “nausea” ensues will be a fitting rebuttal to that trite commercialism we alluded to above.

Robert del Valle, Real Detroit Weekly

RDV included our show in his Stage & Canvas column in this week’s RDW. Yay!

The Romeo Times also has a bonus sneak peak at part of the gallery set up with art before the show opens tomorrow, Friday, October 7th from 7-10pm.

Happy Serum: Press Roundup

I can hardly believe how fast time flies and that our show is opening tomorrow. We’ve put a heck of a lot of hours into putting this together and it all culminates in a big ol’ party tomorrow. Here are some of the articles some nice folks have written about the show:

The Romeo Observer - Happy Serum art show features 3 pop surrealists

The Oakland Press - Starkweather Arts Center gives metro Detroit ‘Happy Serum’

The Macomb Daily - A dose of ‘Happy Serum’ at Starkweather Arts Center

Advisor & Source - Artists bring unique works to Starkweather exhibit (Note: the pictures in the article show one of my prints, but the other works are that of Emi Slade (the cyclops sculpture) and Daniel Allyn Lee’s Happycloud Thunderhead plushies.)

CW50 - “Happy Serum”

Perfect Laughter - Happy Serum Opens on June 3 at Starkweather Arts Center

Whew! I’m pretty stoked for tomorrow. Hope to see you there!

Press about “A Bun A Day”

I’ve been getting some nice press for my upcoming solo exhibition in various blogs (Perfect Laughter, streetculturemash, Motorcityblog). Today I got some attention in some printed locations (who conveniently also post their content online for me to share with you).

Metro Times featured me as one of their “Critic’s Picks,” and Real Detroit Weekly’s Robert del Valle wrote me up in his Stage & Canvas column.

Did you notice how both went out of their way to make sure you knew that I call myself lowbrow? I guess not everyone must love that term. Well, I do and it describes me perfectly.
